The City of Gothenburg has begun a major procurement process for a new cable car line. The City is also now working with detailed development plans for four areas that will be affected by the cable car. In all, the new structure will impact 28 existing detailed development plans.
A 3-km line will run from Järntorget in central Gothenburg to Wieselgrensplatsen on Hisingen Island, via stations at Lindholmen and Lundby. A tri-cable construction will be used for maximum wind stability, so that the line can operate even in strong winds. Projected capacity is at least 2,000 passengers per direction and hour, with a frequency of at least one gondola per minute and a travelling speed of 18–25 km/h. The line should open for normal service in June 2021 to mark the 400-year jubilee of the City of Gothenburg.
